Tools for Change

Dr. Heather Dawn Clark

Dear Ones,

Recently I toured the Museum for Tolerance in Los Angeles. There were so many vivid examples of cruelty and inhumanity that it was heart-wrenching! One of the things that really shocked and saddened me was to discover websites of many organizations including churches whose mission is to systematically teach hatred. Momentarily I was discouraged and disheartened.

Then I remembered the words of Ernest Holmes, in his "Sermon by the Sea", who said that if we could find one thousand people who were for something and against nothing, we could change the world. As Religious Scientists, we hold the tools for change in our hands because we understand the creative process. I remembered our vision and know the whole new world that we declare every Sunday is a world that works for everybody.

Each one of us is using the only power there is whenever we think. We are creating our worlds through our perceptions, opinions, judgments and words. We have the tools to consciously create what we do want.

Let's start with the basics that there is a mighty moving Power for Good in the Universe and we are using It and we can consciously use It. This power for Good is Love. That Love is the nature of all life whether we know it or not! We could think of it this way, Love contemplated Itself and by joyously loving Itself, It created us in Its image! When we know who we are in essence, how could we be anything but loving to ourselves? All the acts of unkindness and hatred then become cases of mistaken identity. We simply had forgotten who we really are.

One of the first things to do is to begin a dialogue with Infinite Love within you. You do this through meditation or contemplation of the nature of the Divine. Then realizing that the essence that you are is Divine love, you start appreciating all that you are. Start on easy parts. When you were a tiny baby you loved everything about yourself including your feces! You had not learned to judge yourself as wrong or judge any parts as "lacking." Recently I observed a four-month old baby who was kicking and squealing with delight as his mom changed his diapers. He was loving being in his body! You can start with your body! But you are much more than your body! Practice loving your emotions. Practice loving your talents. Practice loving your thoughts.

Then teach the people in your world that they, too, are Love. We do that by being fully present for them when we are with them. What that means is that you realize that people are to be loved and things are to be used. How would your world look if you systematically caught your children, spouse or friends doing something right and praising it? What if everyone in your circle of influence knew that when they were in your presence, they mattered? What if we refused to gossip, complain or rationalize?

Maybe, just maybe, someday they might build another museum, celebrating the courageous, clear-thinking women, men and children who had systematically taught the world to love!

Love,
Heather
