Wisdom in All Creatures

Dear Ones,

When we recognize that there is an Infinite Intelligence at work everywhere, we can see "sermons in stones," music in the spheres, and wisdom in all creatures. Over the years, I have learned many things from my pets.

I am writing this article at my sister's home in Calgary, Canada. The family includes a big dog and two cats. From the dog, whose name is "Copain", or friend in French, I observe friendliness. He is absolutely ecstatic to see his family whether they have been away for a week or for an hour. He greets each one personally with a big bone in his mouth and a friendly yowl. He is not satisfied until each person, including guests, greets him with a pat or a hug.

Many years ago my sister's dog and my cat were close friends. The dog was Bristol, a Bearded Collie - think of an old English sheep dog, but a little more refined. The cat, Patches, was a small multi-colored mixed breed. They were babies together and truly thought of themselves as siblings despite the difference in their sizes and their species. When it was time to take Bristol for a walk, Patches would go, too. But she would go ahead and warn him of any terrors ahead on the path - hissing and spitting at the perceived dangers, usually other dogs.

One heart-breaking day, Bristol got his first summer hair cut. It had been a tough experience for him, being away from home at a strange groomer's, and from being exquisitely clothed in long hair to being entirely naked. He looked embarrassed and dejected. Then when he got home, he saw his best friend sunning herself on the back stoops. He bounded up the step with joy and much to his surprise, he was greeted with a hiss not a purr. However, that didn't stop him. He kept after her until she recognized him.

These precious pets from my past and present, remind me of the nature of life. Really, the Universe is a very friendly place. It is completely for us. Just like Copain, Divine Presence greets us with joy and constantly presents us with the best gifts It has. These gifts are the abundance that we can embody. We, too, always have a partner, a friend walking with us, protecting, and loving. Also, sometimes, we do not recognize our Best Friend because that friend came in a package we were not expecting.

This month, open your mind and heart to see the face of God in every person, creature and circumstance. God is always with you as you walk your spiritual path.
